WeatherCall® Mobile: Technology to help you make the right call.

footballSevere storms and lightning pose serious safety concerns for outdoor sports or other similar activities. Monitoring dangerous weather conditions on site using only your eyes or ears produce "best-guess" decisions which can compromise safety.

In the past, knowing if the National Weather Service (NWS) has included your immediate location in a severe weather warning without the aid of visual weather radar or other maps was impossible.

The new WeatherCall® Mobile technology alerts the user to the danger by phone call or text, and delivers highly localized NWS warning area maps and radar animations based on a smart phone's constantly updating location data.

Even more random and difficult to keep track of is lightning. It frequently originates from storm cells which never meet the NWS "severe" criteria, yet produce deadly cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

Lightning is extremely dangerous, killing an average of 58 and injuring over 300 people in the US each year. A high percentage of lightning incidences occur on outdoor sports fields.

Organized sports officials and coaches are ultimately responsible for making critical on-site safety decisions regarding lightning proximity. The intense focus required for officiating or coaching makes monitoring approaching storms even more challenging.

Organizers and officials of any type of outdoor activities are supposed to be familiar with the "Flash-to-Bang" rule used to estimate how close a strike is:

Start to count seconds when a lightning flash is seen-if the thunder happens BEFORE you count to 30, the strike is less than 6 miles away and you are at risk of being struck.

"Flash-to-Bang" is often used incorrectly. Technology is now available to do the monitoring so you can concentrate on the game.

WeatherCall Mobile is:

Softball
  • ACCURATE: Built on the proven WeatherCall storm warning technology used by hundreds of thousands nationwide, WeatherCall Mobile uses data from the National Weather Service (NWS) and the United States Precision Lightning Network (USPLN). Sophisticated sensors calculate the latitude/longitude of a strike and match it up with the location of YOUR smart phone.
  • EASY TO USE: When you start the application, your smart phone will ask permission to share your location with our system. When you accept, our system will create a virtual 6-mile radius around your current location and activate severe weather and/or lightning notification (depending on which service level you subscribe to).
  • AFFORDABLE: Precision severe weather or lightning notification on your smart phone can be as inexpensive as less than one dollar per month.
